Several unidentified drones were seen flying over Fort McNair, a military base in Washington, D.C., according to a source close to the matter who spoke with WTOP. The installation is home to two members of President Donald Trump's cabinet: Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

WTOP National Security Correspondent J.J. Green confirmed that the drones appeared above the base during a single night within the past week and a half. The Washington Post was the first outlet to report on the sightings.

The episode comes as the U.S. military pays closer attention to potential threats at domestic bases following American strikes against Iran. Two bases in the United States, one in New Jersey and one in Florida, have raised their alert status to the second highest level because of intelligence pointing to the possibility of an attack.

In a statement, the Army said it was "aware of the reported drone sightings near Fort McNair and the surrounding areas." It added that it is working with law enforcement and interagency partners to monitor and investigate the reports.

The Army stressed that the safety of service members and civilian personnel who work and live on the base is its top priority. "Currently, there is no credible threat to Fort McNair," the statement said, though the service will keep monitoring the situation and "adjust force protection measures as needed."

Key questions remain unanswered. It is not yet known who launched the drones, and it is unclear whether any of the devices were recovered.

Green said such activity is not out of the ordinary. Reporting on WTOP on Thursday, he relayed that sources described the possible explanations as wide-ranging. "This could range from a curious person or people to a dedicated terrorist organization or some kind of criminal activity," he said.

Around the base, the daily routine appeared unchanged, with commuters moving in and out along the busy roads nearby. The sightings nonetheless underscore how closely military installations are being watched while the conflict with Iran continues.
